15 & 16 May 2004 This year's Hare Scramble was once again held at Smokey Mountain 4x4 track in the upper reaches of the scenic Ingogo Valley in Northern KwaZulu Natal, just outside Newcastle.
The course not only proved scenic, but tecnically exacting to boot. Many were the spills for the unwary and the unskilled. After several hours of gruelling scramble through some really rugged terrain those riders tough enough, or crazy enough, decided to take on the daunting hill climb. And this is some hill climb! Even on foot it is a scramble and for those that finally reached the top, they truly deserved the title "Kings of the Mountain". After taking almost an hour to cover 500 metres the riders spent more time out of the saddle than in. If you were not there you missed a great event! Click any photo for an enlargement
More photos are available from Tom Cilliers Stats: With 80 riders taking part. this event brought some 250 visitors to Newcastle.
