"THE BATTLE OF FORT AMIEL"

Friday 20th February 2004

On the evening of Friday 20th February 2004 the Fort hosted the delegates and guests to the 4th Newcastles of the World Summit to a camp supper.

"Hardly had the sun gone down and the guests had helped themselves to a drink than the Fort was attacked by a marauding Zulu Impi who broke through the gates and advanced on the congregation. Fortunately the Redcoats were quick off the mark and after a few volleys of Martini Henry fire were able to drive off the intruders inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy."

This mock battle was staged by the Sizanani Zulu Dancers and the Dundee Die Hards, two well known groups in Northern KwaZulu Natal. These two groups have faced each other off on several occasions but as most of them involve the Battle of Isandlwana where the Redcoats get wiped out to the man the re-enactors decided that this time the Redcoats should win. After all it is their fort!

After the "battle" the Sizanani Dancers put on a dazzling display of Zulu Dancing much to everyone's delight.
