| ACTIVITIES
a) Exhibitions:
Temporary exhibitions, and loan from other galleries are regularly held. These cover important issues such as “identity”, “human rights” and “aids awareness”. These present multiple perspectives of cultural heritage.
b) Workshops :
The gallery is committed to the development of the viable craft industry in Newcastle. Many workshops on craft development skills are held for unemployed people.
c) Isiphetu :
One of these projects, called ISIPHETHU (a Zulu word meaning “Fountain”) has received national acclaim. The works produced by this group of women are beautiful hand embroidered and appliquéd images reflecting an aspect of their personal lives.
d) Gallery Shop :
Locally produced craft is sold in the well stocked gallery shop. The wide variety of items for sale include beadwork, gemstones, items made from recycled materials, Isiphethu hangings, wood carvings, traditional Zulu pots and much more. |
